Gillian Duff, one of our newer members, has all the gossip from our last meeting.

Nethergate Writers Minutes 26/9/19

Abby opened the meeting and allocated 70 mins for readings and the second half for business.

Readings

Susan – Pause: This thoughtful and heart-breaking piece was very well received and shows just what you can product from any stimulus. This was a response to seeing chickens on a lorry in Coupar Angus.

David – Drifting: A balanced, emotional story with some lovely phrases (“futureless future”). Work on pacing might be David’s next step. Also there seems to be a thread running through David’s work. Perhaps an anthology in the making?

Gillian – Interview scene: A bit cliched in parts. Need to develop DI McIntosh’s character more and the tension in the relationship

Alana – Dura Mater: Alana’s dissertation piece for Uni was very well received. Great characters and lovely use of dialogue. Now to finish the novel.

Sarah – This was a futuristic piece which had allegorical elements. (David thought of the Slave Trade). Interesting commentary on the meaning of life.

Richard – The Yoof of the World: Astute observation and great pace made this a really engaging piece. Members are invited to read the whole piece and comment.

Business

Rosie proposed room bookings should be made fortnightly and so the next meeting is July 17th. Would there be enough materials? Readings could just be once a month if necessary.

Organisation – more people need to step up to the plate and take part in running the group. Sue offered to join the committee.

Project – The nature, timeline and schedule for delivery will be discussed at committee. “The Nethergate” was a suggested scope as it allows plenty of scope. Anthology of short stories, poetry etc. Word limit still to be discussed. Is it too Parochial? The Street can cover every aspect of life.

Committee: Abby, Rosie, Craig, Fraser, Dele, Sue.
