Our first meeting of 2019 was a most enjoyable one, and here’s our Treasurer, Rosie Baillie, to tell you all about it.

Meeting of the Nethergate Writers, 30/01/2019

We were delighted to welcome three new faces to our first meeting of 2019: Kate, Gillian and Fraser. We hope that they enjoyed their first meeting with us and that it will be the first of many more.

After introductions were made for our new members, we got straight down to discussing several pieces of writing.

First was ‘Barrington Crale Investigates’ by Craig – this was an excerpt of the first chapter of a longer piece that Craig is working on. The group enjoyed the introduction to this charming detective story very much and recognised hints of Jeeves and Wooster in the dialogue between Crale and his butler Frobisher. We look forward to hearing more as Crale sets off on his travels to investigate mysteries galore.

Next was a piece from Roddie called ‘Blethers‘, written in full Glaswegian dialect, which warned against the dangers of malicious gossip! The group liked this piece very much and enjoyed hearing Roddie deliver it with gusto.

Colin gave us ‘A Green Thought In A Green Shade‘ – a short tale about a traveller’s home-coming where he discovered his much-loved landscape had changed beyond recognition. This was a very thoughtful story which we all enjoyed, especially its vivid descriptions and good pacing.

David C had written ‘A Family of Three‘ –  a humorous piece about the integral role played by a dog in a family. It was a first draft which the group liked very much, and David agreed he would develop it some more.

Kate read a poem she had written entitled ‘Dear Slimming World’ in response to receipt of leaflets from this company in the Christmas aftermath. This was very witty and had a great rhyme scheme – listeners commented that it had hints of Victoria Wood both in its writing and delivery.

And finally Rosie regaled the group with her latest version of ‘Tributorious’ a screenplay about a hapless group of tribute artists. The group enjoyed this instalment and encouraged Rosie to keep going with it.

The meeting concluded with a short discussion of Nethergate Writers business. Rosie confirmed that all stock of 50 Shades had now been sold, and only a few sale or return payments remained to be received. The group also discussed plans and options for the next project which would be a collection of short stories. More news on this to follow – watch this space.
